ABOUT ABOUT
Robert Burns Dinner

The Celtic Society of Southern Maryland (CSSM) is celebrating its annual Robert Burns Night on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at the Hilton Garden Inn Solomons.

This 15th annual Burns Night is held to honor the birthday of Scotland's poet laureate and is a formal evening affair for those who love history, Celtic tradition and Robert Burns, the man and poet.

Social hour and cash bar begin at 5:30pm followed by entertainment and dinner. Please take advantage of the lovely hotel accomodations available at http://hiltongardeninn.hilton.com/en/gi/groups/personalized/D/DCASOGI-RBD-20110115/index.jhtml?WT.mc_id=POG

The menu will include cock-a-leekie soup, haggis, neeps and tatties, roast beef, salmon and bread pudding.

Robert Burns was born on January 25, 1759. Suppers in his honor began in 1796 when close friends of Scotland's most famous poet, then and now, held the first supper in tribute to the immortal memory of the poet who wrote about and fervently believed in the equality of man.

Today Burns Suppers have become a world-wide phenomenon, being celebrated in such surprising places as Japan and India as well as anywhere else you’d expect to find lovers of Scotland and its culture. The basic format for the evening has remained unchanged.

Wear your kilt, or favorite formal attire in the Celtic spirit to enjoy creative toasts to the Queen, the President, the lads, and lassies, an ode to the haggis, fiddles, bagpipes, dancing, “sangs and clatter”.

Retire after dinner to the cozy heated “gentlemen’s den” for a smoke and brandy (ladies are welcome, too). Quality cigars will be available for purchase.
