Medieval Feast 2018 -
February 16th, seating promptly at 6:30 pm
St James Parish, Lothian MD
And so it came to pass that on December 26th, 1251, ten year-old Scottish King Alexander III marries Henry III of England's eldest daughter, Princess Margaret, age 11, in York in England. Henry thought by virtue of this marriage, Alexander would swear fealty to the English King, but even at age 10 Alexander was loyal to Scotland and denied Henry his victory. Caring only for his daughter as a bargaining chip, when his plan failed, he sent her packing with Alexander despite the custom for child marriages that the girl typically remained with her family until she came of age. Sailing up the coast of Scotland toward Aberdeen in the fierce mid-winter sea, Alexander and Margaret were shipwrecked near Dunotter Castle.
Join us as we celebrate their wedding, their survival and that of their retinue, while we hold a joyous wedding feast. But beware of English plots because Henry is still trying to take the Scottish throne!
Enjoy a little history with a side dish of humor. Shake off the snow and wintry doldrums and wear your favorite Medieval wedding finery (plain clothing allowed, too, if you must). Be prepared to enjoy numerous dishes prepared using traditional ingredients of the period. Just as at a great feast hall where each person supplied their own kit, we suggest that you bring your finest period dining utensils, plates, soup bowl, mugs, goblets and napkins, candles (column styles stand easily on the table – if you bring tapers, bring candleholders, as well.) Place settings can be provided, if necessary.
Entertainment will include musicians, perhaps a story, and always a good time. Traditional Dancing after dinner. For additional information please email [email protected]. Advance tickets only, purchase tickets online at http://cssm.ticketleap.com. Tickets are $30, additional online fees apply.
*Please note that CSSM doesn't endorse child marriage, we are merely taking advantage of a historical event as an excuse for a feast.
